Quick conversions to memorize
1 acre = 43,560 sq ft 1 gallon = 128 oz 1 lb = 16 oz 1 acre ≈ 208.7 ft × 208.7 ft GPA constant = 5,940
Sprayer calibration
2 formulas
Sprayer Calibration (GPA)
GPA = (GPM × 5,940) ÷ (MPH × W)

GPA = gallons per acre, GPM = nozzle output (gal/min), MPH = travel speed, W = nozzle spacing in inches. The constant 5,940 converts the units.

Worked example0.4 GPM, 3 MPH, 20" spacing → (0.4 × 5,940) ÷ (3 × 20) = 39.6 GPA

Application Rate
Rate = Amount Applied ÷ Area Treated

How much product per unit area. Expressed as lbs/acre, oz/1,000 sq ft, or gal/acre depending on the label.

Worked example3 lbs over 15,000 sq ft = 0.2 lbs per 1,000 sq ft
Mixing & dilution
2 formulas
Dilution Rate
Amount = Rate per gallon × Total gallons

How much concentrate to add to water. The label rate is usually given in oz per gallon.

Worked example1.5 oz/gal × 4 gallons = 6 oz of concentrate

Percent Solution
% = (Amount of AI ÷ Total Volume) × 100

AI = active ingredient. Used to determine the concentration of a mixed solution as a percentage.

Worked example2 oz AI in 100 oz total → (2 ÷ 100) × 100 = 2% solution
Area & geometry

Area Calculations
Rectangle: L × W | Circle: 3.14 × r² | Triangle: ½ × b × h

For irregular shapes, break the area into simple shapes and add the results together. Always work in feet, then convert to acres at the end if needed.

Worked example200 ft × 120 ft = 24,000 sq ft → 24,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.55 acres

Toxicity & safety
1 reference
Signal Word Toxicity Scale
DANGER (I) → WARNING (II) → CAUTION (III / IV)

Toxicity Category I is the most toxic. DANGER may include the word "POISON" and a skull-and-crossbones symbol. Lower LD50 = more toxic.

RememberThe signal word is required on every label and tells you the acute toxicity at a glance — it's one of the most-tested label elements.

Problem 1 — Calibration
Your sprayer outputs 0.5 GPM. You walk at 2.5 MPH with 24-inch nozzle spacing. What is your application rate in GPA?
Problem 2 — Dilution
Label says 2.5 oz per gallon. You have a 4-gallon sprayer. How many ounces of concentrate?
Problem 3 — Area
A rectangular lawn is 200 ft × 120 ft. How many acres is this?
